Jon Hassell - City - Works Of Fiction - 3 Disc expanded version on All Saints.

One of the truly unique instrumental voices of the last half century, Jon Hassell has redefined the trumpet as a compositional sound. His explorations of oblique phrasing, post-drupad melodic structures and kaleidoscopic rhythmic geometry, coalesced into a micro-genre of intense, almost poisonous beauty. From the earliest works he managed to fuse folkloric musical aesthetics with the sort of cutting edge, digital manipulations which fatally beguiled lesser composers. The results were rarely less than breathtaking. City - Works Of fiction marked a turning point in which the bejeweled spirit landscapes of Mati Klarwein were replaced by a hybrid extropolis of urban ethnographies sampling (literally) a dozen contemporary genres and warping them dizzyingly to his will. This release combines the original recording, a later performance mixed live by Brian Eno and a selection of remixes by various luminaries. The perfect place to start reviewing a remarkable, genuinely seminal body of work.
